Alaska Energy Statistics Preliminary Report
The Alaska Energy Statistics preliminary report for calendar year 2011 is now available for review

AK Wind-Diesel Conference
Feb. 7-8, 2013 Seward, AK

This year, the 2013 International Wind-Diesel Workshop will be held in Hawaii during the fall. Many stakeholders wanted to also have an Alaska specific event that was focused on wind-diesel in arctic environments. Therefore, a smaller Alaska Wind-Diesel Workshop will be held February 7-8, 2013 in Seward at the AVTEC training facility.

The event will cover two days with the first day revolving around training sessions including Wind-Diesel 101, Wind-Diesel 201, Electrical Concepts for Non-Engineers, Tower Climbing, Diesel Operations, etc. The second day will highlight stakeholder presentations with dialogue on key discussions. Topics will include foundation design, energy storage, high penetration wind-diesel, wind-diesel control, secondary loads, and more.

More details and a full agenda will be coming soon. If there are specific topics or sessions you'd like to see included, please email Kat Keith at katherinekeith11@gmail.com or Stephanie Nowers at sjnowers@mtaonline.net

Reduce the cost of energy in Alaska
In an effort to reduce the cost of energy in Alaska, sixteen emerging technology projects have been selected to receive grant funds through the Alaska Energy Authority (AEA) Emerging Energy Technology Fund. Projects include increasing energy efficiencies for diesel generators, developing hydrokinetic resources, enhancing wind power and storage capabilities, heat pumps and biomass across the state.

Attached is a full news release and descriptions of the projects.  Feel free to contact me with any interview request or with additional questions.  Sara Fisher-Goad, AEA executive director, will also make a few remarks in advance of Monday’s (11/19) Anchorage Chamber “Make it Monday” forum at the Dena’ina Center at noon.

Addressing the Liability Issue and Beyond
May 5, 2011
This webinar will outline the critical steps in siting renewable energy on contaminated lands, evaluate the key environmental issues associated with such projects, and identify the environmental resources impacted. The program will also evaluate the essential project considerations for wind and solar developments on brownfields. Presenters from the Environmental Protection Agency will discuss the RE-Powering America's Land Initiative and the tools available to assist in redevelopment of contaminated sites. They will also discuss the liability issues associated with cleaned-up sites; evaluate the existing statutory protections under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA, aka Superfund); and discuss the EPA's enforcement discretion policies and tools.

4/15/2011 Wright paticipates in DOE Tribal Energy Roundtable
Bruce Wright attended the Department of Energy's Tribal Energy Roundtable in Anchorage on April 14, 2011. Leaders from around the state discussed their concerns and what DOE can do assist energy conservation and renewable energy development in the state. DOE staff were especially interested to learn about the problems associated with the approval of the Sand Point wind project and the DOE Secretary's reluctance to sign off on the project for nearly 2 years after the avian studies were concluded, Wright said, "The science was good, the environmental assessment was good, but the Secretary apparently didn't have the balls to sign off, and this was indicated by his staff's questioning the avian data." We hope the DOE will get the message and embrace science instead of politics when asked to authorize wind projects. "His delay cost the project nearly $1,000,000."

A huge thanks to all of you that have already filled out Wind Powering America's questionnaire on wind energy stakeholder perspectives. Your participation is very important and greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

For those that have not, we encourage you to fill out the questionnaire by next Wednesday, January 26th. The goal of the questionnaire is to better understand which wind energy development issues are most important to specific stakeholder groups. The questionnaire will take approximately 5-10 minutes.

To fill out the questionnaire, please follow the "important" survey link through the www.akwidac.com website, or go directly to: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6TRW39Y.

Thank you very much for your time and support. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions related to the questionnaire.

Best, Jill
